Pico do Arieiro is the sunrise most people imagine when they think of Madeira. At 1,818 metres above sea level it is the island’s third-highest peak, after Pico Ruivo and Pico das Torres, and it looks straight across the central mountain massif.

The altitude is what sets the sunrise apart. Cloud often forms below the highest peaks, and when conditions line up you arrive to find the mountains standing above a wide white cloud layer. Then the sky starts to brighten, the cloud tops turn orange and pink, and the surrounding peaks slowly come out of the dark.

This is the famous Madeira sea-of-clouds sunrise. It is not guaranteed, but when it happens Pico do Arieiro is very hard to beat.

Why Pico do Arieiro is so good by car

You do not have to hike to the summit. A paved road runs to the Pico do Arieiro area, which makes it one of the most accessible high-mountain viewpoints on the island.

4. take a short walk;
5. carry on exploring Madeira.

How long from Funchal?

Allow 45 minutes to an hour of driving from central Funchal in normal conditions. You will see 40–50 minutes quoted elsewhere, which is possible on an empty road in clear weather. Plan a sunrise around the longer figure, then add time for parking, fog and slower mountain driving on top.

When should you arrive?

Aim to be there about 30–45 minutes before sunrise. The light before the sun appears is often as good as the sunrise itself.

Main disadvantage

If Pico do Arieiro is Madeira’s famous sunrise spot, Bica da Cana is one of the strongest alternatives.

The viewpoint sits at about 1,580 metres, looking over the São Vicente valley and Madeira’s mountainous interior. That gives it several of the qualities that make Pico do Arieiro so good:

3. Ponta do Rosto — best coastal sunrise

Best for: ocean views, eastern Madeira, and anyone who would prefer not to drive into the high mountains.

If you would rather watch the sun come up beside the Atlantic than above the clouds, head east.

Ponta do Rosto is on the Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula at Madeira’s eastern end, a short climb off the main road towards the peninsula, with a small car park at the viewpoint. The landscape could hardly be more different from central Madeira. There are no dense forests or tall green mountains. Instead, expect:

• exposed volcanic cliffs;
• dry, sparse terrain;
• wide Atlantic views;
• a rugged coastline;
• very little tree cover.

It suits you if:

4. Pico do Facho — best sunrise view near Machico

Best for: easy access, views over Machico, and a gentler morning.

Pico do Facho rises above Machico on Madeira’s east coast. At around 300 metres it is far lower than Pico do Arieiro or Bica da Cana, but that is not necessarily a drawback.

From the top you look over the Machico valley to the central peaks, out to Ponta de São Lourenço, and south-east to the Desertas Islands. The name comes from the beacon fires once lit on the summit to warn Machico of approaching pirates.

Why Pico do Facho is a good alternative

Choose it if:

• you are staying in Machico;
• you want an easier early-morning drive;
• the mountain forecast looks poor;
• you prefer coastal views;
• you are heading on to Ponta de São Lourenço afterwards.

5. Cristo Rei, Garajau — best easy sunrise near Funchal

Best for: a short drive, couples, and anyone who would rather not set an extremely early alarm.

Not every Madeira sunrise has to be a mountain expedition. The Cristo Rei viewpoint at Garajau looks out over the Atlantic from the south-east coast, just east of Funchal.

Why choose Cristo Rei?

The biggest advantage is convenience. Compared with Pico do Arieiro, there is no long pre-dawn mountain drive to commit to.

It works particularly well if:

• you are staying in or around Funchal or Caniço;
• you are short of time;
• you do not like mountain roads;
• you simply want a quiet morning by the ocean.

What time should you leave for sunrise?

Check the sunrise time for your date first. Across the year it moves from about 06:57 in mid-June to 08:17 in late October, and our month-by-month sunrise timings give the figure for your week.

Then aim to arrive 30–45 minutes beforehand. If sunrise is at 07:20, for example, plan to reach your viewpoint around 06:35–06:50.

Work backwards from there using the driving time, and add a margin for parking, fog and a slower drive than you expected.

Arrive at the moment your weather app says “sunrise” and you have probably missed part of the show. Before the sun appears you may see:

One of the most useful sunrise rules on Madeira is not to judge the whole island from your hotel window. Conditions can differ sharply with altitude, between coasts, and with the wind direction and the height of the cloud. A grey Funchal often sits beneath a clear summit, and the reverse happens too.

Can you chase better weather by car?

To an extent. A hire car gives you more flexibility than a fixed tour, provided you settle the backup before you set off. For example:
