Funchal: Pico do Arieiro Sunrise Hiking Transfer

4.8 (4733 verified reviews)

About This Experience

This is the logistics package that makes the PR1 possible without a rental car. A shared van — a maximum of eight guests — collects you from your accommodation in Funchal or Caniço in the dark, climbs the switchbacks to the Pico do Arieiro car park at 1,818 metres, and leaves you on the summit terrace in time for sunrise.

From there the walking is yours to pace. The Vereda do Areeiro traverses the ridge past Pico das Torres to Pico Ruivo, Madeira's highest point at 1,862 metres, on a stone-cut path of staircases, tunnels and exposed balconies. Most people take five hours over the full route, which continues down to Achada do Teixeira for a total of roughly 10 kilometres.

The operator gives you a printed schedule and map explanation at the drop-off rather than a guide, so you are self-guided on the trail itself. What you are buying is the transport at both ends: a lift up before dawn and, crucially, a driver waiting at a completely different trailhead when you come off the mountain — the problem a hire car cannot solve on a one-way route.

With more than 4,700 verified reviews at 4.8 out of 5, this is by a wide margin the most-booked sunrise transfer on the island. Trail permits are not included in the fare, though the operator will reserve PR1 slots for guests who ask soon after booking, subject to availability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a guide included on this transfer?

No. This is a self-guided hike — you get transport, a trail timing schedule and a map briefing at the drop-off, then walk the PR1 at your own pace. If you want someone with you on the ridge, book one of the guided sunrise hikes instead.

Does the price include the PR1 trail permit?

No. Permits are booked separately on the regional government's SIMplifica platform, and as of 2026 the PR1 Vereda do Areeiro carries a €10.50 per-person fee. The operator can reserve slots on your behalf if you contact them shortly after booking, but availability is limited and not guaranteed.

Where does the hike actually finish?

At Achada do Teixeira, roughly 10 kilometres from where you were dropped off and on the other side of the massif. Your driver meets you there at an agreed time — this is the single biggest practical advantage over driving yourself.

Which areas does pickup cover?

Funchal, Caniço and São Gonçalo only. Accommodation outside those zones is not served, so check your address against the pickup area before booking.

How early is the pickup?

Typically between 4:00 and 5:00 am depending on the season. The exact time is confirmed by the operator the afternoon before, usually by message, because it shifts with the sunrise.
