Funchal: Sunrise Pico do Arieiro & Ruivo Hike Transfer

About This Experience
A timed shuttle built around the one-way PR1, at the lowest price of any full hiking transfer we track. You are collected at one of four Funchal pickup points, driven up for sunrise at Pico do Arieiro, and left to walk the ridge to Pico Ruivo at your own pace.
The operator quotes the route at 10 kilometres with 637 metres of ascent, moderate difficulty, and three to five hours of walking. That figure covers the traverse plus the descent to Achada do Teixeira, where a scheduled vehicle takes you back. A headtorch or phone light matters here — the first stretch after sunrise still runs through unlit tunnels.
What you get beyond the ride is a Trail Timing Guide: the operator sends pickup points, exact times and pacing advice by message so you know what you have to hit at the far end. There is no guide on the mountain with you.
Trail permits are excluded and must be bought by each hiker on the SIMplifica platform before the hike — the operator is blunt that walkers without a valid ticket may be turned back at the checkpoint. They will, however, try to secure PR1 permits for transfer customers who contact them early, since the early slots sell out weeks ahead.

What Travelers Say
Rated 4.6/5 by 1140 verified GetYourGuide travelers.
The pickup time from Achada do Teixeira should have been respected so that we could have spent more time in the mountains. When we booked the trip, the scheduled pickup time was 1:40 PM, but we were picked up at 12:40 PM, one hour earlier than scheduled.

A very well-organized tour, with transportation at the golden hour, so the photos turn out perfectly! There could have been a little more time on site, like an hour or two more. Comfortable and punctual transportation!
— Maciej, August
Instructions on when and how to get to the pick up point were sent the day before. Was easy to find and the transfer was super punctual, arrived exactly when it said it would and left exactly on time too. The driver gave clear instructions in English on where to meet for the drop off point too. These a transfer only, the hike is self guided (I.e no guide) and the driver gave barely any info on the hike itself so do a quick research before you go or ask people along the route if needed but it’s fairly straight forward. Highly recommend!

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is this cheaper than other PR1 transfers?
It is a fixed-point shuttle rather than a door-to-door service — you meet the van at one of four Funchal pickup points instead of being collected from your accommodation, and there is no guide, snack or permit included.
How long is the hike itself?
The operator quotes 10 kilometres and 637 metres of ascent at moderate difficulty, taking three to five hours. That is the Arieiro-to-Ruivo traverse plus the descent to Achada do Teixeira.
Do I need a headtorch?
Yes. The operator lists it as essential gear. Even after sunrise the PR1 passes through several unlit rock tunnels, and you set off in the dark.
Can the operator get me a PR1 permit?
They will try, for transfer customers only, and they ask you to contact them as soon as possible after booking. Permit availability is limited and cannot be guaranteed — book your own on SIMplifica as the safer route.
What happens if I miss the return pickup?
The return transport runs to a fixed schedule from Achada do Teixeira, which is why the Trail Timing Guide matters. Achada do Teixeira is remote and taxis are scarce, so pace the walk to the times you were given.
