Madeira: Pico Arieiro Sunset with Stairway to Heaven Option

4.6 (1265 verified reviews)

About This Experience

The same mountain, the opposite end of the day — and a considerably more civilised alarm clock. A minibus takes you up to the Pico do Arieiro terrace at 1,818 metres for golden hour, when the light rakes across the ridges towards Pico das Torres and the valleys fill with shadow.

Sunset here has a practical advantage over sunrise: you can see what the weather is doing before you commit to the drive, and the cloud inversion that hides the view at dawn has often burned off by evening. It also runs three and a half hours rather than the eight or ten a hiking transfer demands.

Guests who want more than the terrace can walk out independently to the Ninho da Manta viewpoint or to Miradouro da Pedra Rija — the outcrop widely marketed as the Stairway to Heaven. That walk is optional, self-guided and subject to access rules, weather and trail conditions on the day. It is not a guided hiking service and it is not the full PR1 to Pico Ruivo.

Two versions are sold: Basic uses fixed meeting points, Standard collects you inside the operator's pickup area. Official trail or access fees, where they apply, are not included.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.6/5 by 1265 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

The highlight of our week on this beautiful island. We've had plenty of time to walk the first part of the PR1 (stairway to heaven) and see the sunset. It was nice and quiet too so made it more special.

Very professional driver. We got a really really nice sunset. There were lots of places to watch and the sunset looked fantastic. Would highly recommend!

Great guide! Gil was amazing! Views were incredible and not half as many people as during the sunrise views from videos I’ve seen. We weee worried it was cloudy but we had a perfect sunset. Do the short hike of PR1 and come back up for the finish. It’s moderate but worth it! Thank you Gil!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I walk to the Stairway to Heaven on this trip?

Optionally and independently. The operator allows a self-guided walk out to Miradouro da Pedra Rija — the Stairway to Heaven viewpoint — and to Ninho da Manta, subject to access rules, visibility and trail conditions. Head out promptly on arrival so you are back for sunset.

Is sunset better than sunrise at Pico do Arieiro?

It is more forgiving. You can judge the weather before you go, the cloud layer has often lifted by evening, and the trip is three and a half hours rather than eight. Sunrise wins on the sea-of-cloud effect and on having the summit far less crowded.

Is a guide included?

No. Transport is shared and any walking beyond the terrace is self-guided. This is explicitly not a guided hiking service.

Are trail fees included?

No. Official trail or access fees, where they apply to the optional walk, are excluded and remain your responsibility.

What is the difference between the Basic and Standard versions?

Basic uses fixed meeting points. Standard includes pickup and drop-off within the operator's defined pickup area and offers more flexibility.
