Madeira: Sunrise Hike Transfer to Pico do Arieiro (PR1)

4.8 (561 verified reviews)

About This Experience

A small-group shuttle with door-to-door service at both ends, aimed at hikers who want the PR1 without the fixed-meeting-point compromise. The van collects you at your accommodation around 6:00 am, drives up to Pico do Arieiro for sunrise, and returns you to Funchal or Caniço after the walk.

From the summit you hike freely towards Pico Ruivo, reaching 1,862 metres on Madeira's most walked mountain trail. There is no guide — the operator supplies a knowledgeable driver and the route briefing, and you set your own pace over the eight-hour window the product allows.

The operator is unusually direct about permits, and worth listening to. All non-resident hikers must pay the access fee on the official SIMplifica platform, and they strongly advise booking the 8:00 or 8:30 am slot: later slots can leave you waiting at the checkpoint and can cause you to miss your return pickup. Early slots typically sell out weeks in advance, and the operator will attempt to secure them through their tour-operator allocation if you ask.

Neither a personal guide, snacks and drinks, nor the PR1 permit fee are included in the fare.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.8/5 by 561 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

We started with a beautiful sunrise. Then the hike with stunning views! Above the clouds, between the rugged mountain peaks and with a clear blue sky. Every step was more than worth it. It was also nice that we had ground transportation so we didn't have to look for a parking space. And the live guide told us a lot of fun facts about Madeira on the way back.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time slot should I book on SIMplifica?

The operator specifically advises the 8:00 or 8:30 am slot. Later slots risk a wait at the ranger checkpoint and can push you past your scheduled return pickup.

Is this door-to-door?

Yes — collection from your accommodation and return to Funchal and Caniço, which is what separates it from the cheaper fixed-point shuttles.

Is the permit fee included?

No. The PR1 access fee is excluded and every non-resident hiker must pay it on simplifica.madeira.gov.pt. The operator can try to secure early slots from their allocation if you message them.

What time is the pickup?

Around 6:00 am, though the exact time is only confirmed the afternoon before by message, since it moves with the sunrise through the year.

Is there a guide on the trail?

No. You get a driver and a route briefing; the hike itself is self-guided at whatever pace suits you.
